HelpCrunch is a capable live-chat and customer-communication suite. If your priority is an AI that answers 24/7, is grounded in your own data, and bills only for what you use, Chatonio is built for it.
An AI-first alternative to HelpCrunch
HelpCrunch pairs live chat with email marketing, a knowledge base and chatbots. Chatonio is built AI-first: the AI handles every channel around the clock, answers from your real systems, and hands off to your team the moment they're ready — with prepaid, usage-based AI pricing, a genuinely free plan, and email marketing campaigns included on every paid plan.
Chatonio is the better fit if…
- You want an AI that keeps answering until a human takes over — never a dead end.
- Telegram, including B2B group chats, is a core channel for your support.
- You prefer a free plan and pay-as-you-go AI over a per-member subscription.
- You want email-marketing campaigns included on every paid plan — merge tags, A/B-style spintax variants, AI-assisted copy, open/click tracking and one-click unsubscribe — billed per email, not per seat.
HelpCrunch may be the better fit if…
- You want marketing automation beyond the chat itself — automated email sequences and a broader behavioral-messaging toolkit. Chatonio has rule-based chat greetings (Advanced and up) and website pop-ups with lead capture (Pro and Ultimate), but its email campaigns are one-off sends, not automated sequences.
- You're standardizing on HelpCrunch's all-in-one marketing + support suite.

Why teams choose Chatonio
The AI never goes silent
If no agent is available, most tools fall back to a form. Chatonio's AI keeps the conversation alive — answering and calming the customer — until a human is ready, then yields automatically and silently.
You can take the conversation back
In HelpCrunch, the AI decides when a human gets involved. Handoff is a routeToTeam call the agent makes on its own judgment, per its instructions, and no operator-side control to pause it or claim a conversation appears anywhere in their operator documentation. Their analytics reflects the same model: every conversation ends up classified as deflected or routed to team, and there is no "an agent took over" outcome at all.
For a support queue that is merely annoying. For a sales conversation it is expensive — you watch a qualified lead work through a bot loop with no way to step in.
Chatonio inverts that. Every conversation carries a three-way Auto / On / Off switch, and Off is a hard stop rather than a preference. It applies during generation, not only before it: an AI reply takes the better part of a minute to compose, and if you switch the AI off inside that window the reply is never sent to the customer. It is kept as an internal note only your team can see — so you can still lift the wording if it was good — and the conversation is escalated so a human is paged.
Claiming a conversation does the same thing implicitly: the moment it is yours, the AI stops answering new customer messages. You decide when the AI is finished, not the AI.
Answers grounded in your systems
Chatonio answers from the systems you already run — order status, balances, accounts — via your APIs, and scrapes the page when there's no API. Responses are grounded and checked against fabricating facts.
Telegram-native, groups included
Telegram is a first-class channel in Chatonio, including multi-thread group chats for B2B support where each issue in a group is tracked as its own conversation — alongside web chat, email and a branded helpdesk. On Pro and Ultimate plans you can also send one-off Telegram broadcasts to everyone who has ever messaged your bot.
Pay only for the AI you use
HelpCrunch sells AI in prepaid conversation packs. The cheapest is $29 for 100 AI conversations — 29¢ each, falling to about 8¢ only once you are buying ten thousand a month. Three details in their own documentation matter more than the headline rate:
- You pay whether or not it works. The billable unit is "the total number of conversations handled by selected AI agent" — handled, not resolved. Deflected and resolved exist in their product as analytics, not as billing units. A conversation the AI fumbles and hands to a human costs the same 29¢ as one it solves.
- The AI allowance does not scale with your team. Pro includes 50 AI conversations a month. That is 50 at one seat, and still 50 at ten seats — a $250/month plan. Getting to a useful 1,000 a month is another $200/month on top.
- When the quota runs out, the bot goes quiet. Their documentation is explicit: "the AI Agent block will be ignored in chatbot flows… usage stops until the next billing cycle." Not escalated to a human — skipped, mid-flow.
There is also a quieter cost for multilingual teams: HelpCrunch bills AI data sources per item, and "one article added in 3 languages counts as 3 data sources." Chatonio's article and FAQ translations cost nothing extra.
Chatonio bills the tokens each answer actually uses, from a prepaid wallet, times a multiplier printed on the pricing page — 2.0× on Free down to 1.5× on Ultimate. A typical conversation works out around a cent. There is no per-resolution fee, no monthly AI allowance to run out of, and no cliff where the bot stops talking: if the balance ever runs low the conversation escalates to a human instead of going silent.

Speaks your customer's language
Chatonio auto-detects and replies in each customer's language, and ships a Spanish, English, German, Russian and Ukrainian operator dashboard and help center out of the box.
Live in an afternoon
There's no heavy migration project. Connect a channel, add your FAQ and knowledge base, and the AI starts answering — in the customer's language, grounded in your data. Your content stays yours, and you can leave HelpCrunch on your own timeline.
